SACRAMENTO — A tragic fireworks explosion last year in Yolo County, which claimed the lives of seven individuals, has been linked to illegal activities, according to state fire officials. The incident occurred on July 1 in Esparto, a small town situated approximately 37 miles west of Sacramento, leading to a wildfire that consumed 78 acres and prompted nearby evacuations.

Among the deceased were three brothers, including two residents of San Pablo. The explosion, which took place just after 6 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 23 and County Road 86A, sent fireworks soaring and resulted in a dramatic conflagration that was captured on video. Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the warehouse before it erupted catastrophically.

The investigation by Cal Fire’s Office of the State Fire Marshal revealed significant evidence of illegal operations at the site. On Monday, Cal Fire announced that its investigative report had been forwarded to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office for review. State officials urged the community to remain patient as authorities evaluate the findings and plan their next steps.

State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant described the investigation as complex, noting that it evolved over time as new information surfaced. The investigative team diligently pursued various leads, ultimately compiling evidence essential for understanding the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Recently, authorities took action against individuals connected to the facility, revoking the pyrotechnics licenses of Kenneth Chee, associated with Devastating Pyrotechnics Inc. in San Francisco, and Craig Cutright of Blackstar Fireworks. Additionally, the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) issued fines totaling $221,000 to Devastating Pyrotechnics Inc. for multiple safety violations.

The explosion not only raised questions about safety compliance within the fireworks industry but also highlighted issues surrounding the legality of operations at the warehouse. Community members expressed concern over the potential risks posed by such establishments and the need for stricter regulations.

As the investigation moves forward, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office has not yet announced any charges or further actions. Residents and families affected by the tragedy are eager for closure and answers regarding the circumstances that led to the deadly explosion.
