Veracruz, Mexico — A devastating weather system has claimed the lives of at least 47 people as torrential rains lead to widespread flooding and landslides across multiple states in Mexico. As of Sunday, October 12, search efforts continue for at least 38 missing individuals amid the widespread destruction.
The heavy rainfall has primarily impacted the Gulf Coast region, with Veracruz reporting the highest fatalities at 18. Neighboring Hidalgo has confirmed 16 deaths, while at least 12 people have died in Puebla, situated to the east of Mexico City. A tragic account includes a child who lost their life in a landslide in Querétaro.
Authorities attribute the severe weather to remnants of two tropical storms, Pricilla and Raymond, which formed off Mexico’s western coast. The relentless downpour, which persisted from October 6 to October 9, has left 259 towns isolated and damaged thousands of homes and roads, sweeping away vehicles in its wake.
Residents in Poza Rica faced extreme conditions, with reports of floodwaters rising up to 12 feet after the Cazones River overflowed. Areas that are typically safe for inhabitation have become treacherous, creating a dire situation for many families. Amid these challenges, emergency responders have been mobilized, with around 6,000 federal personnel assisting in debris removal and providing food and essential supplies to those affected.
In response to the crisis, officials have established 146 temporary shelters to accommodate more than 5,000 displaced individuals, offering medical assistance and nourishment. Communities still disconnected from regular services are receiving urgent aid; air bridges have been put in place to deliver necessary supplies.
President Claudia Sheinbaum visited the hardest-hit areas and emphasized the need for swift action. “We know that there is a lot of desperation and worry. We’re going to get to everyone,” she stated, addressing the concerns of local residents who remain without power and running water in the aftermath of the storms.
As the situation remains dire, local authorities are continuing their search and rescue efforts while also assessing the broader impact of the flooding on infrastructure and community life. With the recovery ahead, the resilience of the affected communities will be tested in the coming weeks.
