Sydney, Australia – Two off-duty police officers were brutally attacked in Sydney’s inner west while attempting to intervene in a heated argument, described as an “incredibly violent” incident by authorities. The off-duty officers, both 25 years old, were walking along Enmore Road in Newtown when they approached three unknown men engaged in a dispute. The officers were assaulted during the altercation, with one officer being knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head.
The situation escalated to the point where one officer was found unconscious on the road, prompting an off-duty nurse to perform CPR until paramedics arrived at the scene. The injured officer was subsequently taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment and is currently in serious but stable condition.
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley condemned the attack as a “despicable act” and emphasized the level of violence involved in the incident. She commended the efforts of passers-by, especially the off-duty nurse, for their life-saving assistance prior to the arrival of emergency services.
Premier Chris Minns expressed his dismay over the brutal assault, describing it as “sickening” and extending his thoughts to the injured officers and their families. The officers had been in the area for a concert, and details surrounding the lead-up to the attack remain unclear.
Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald reassured the public that law enforcement officials are actively seeking those responsible for the assault. Witness interviews and CCTV footage from the area are being utilized as part of the investigation under Strike Force Rabnor.
