Former President Donald Trump has secured the Republican nomination for president in 2024.
Now, another name has been added to the ever-growing list of potential candidates.
During an interview on ABC, Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio was asked by host Jon Karl about reports that Trump is considering him as a potential VP pick.
“I want to turn to politics. There were reports this week that you are possibly under consideration to be Donald Trump’s running mate. I don’t put a lot of stock in this reporting right now. We’re early. But you said it would be an honor to be offered a spot on this ticket. Really?” Karl asked.
Rubio responded: “I think anyone who is offered the opportunity to serve this country as vice president should be honored by the opportunity to do it if you are in public service. I’m in the Senate because I want to serve the country. Being vice president is an important way to serve the country. But I’ve also been clear. I’ve never talked to Donald Trump. I’ve never talked to anybody on his team or family or inner circle about vice president. That’s the decision he’s going to make. He has plenty of really good people to pick from.”
“I will tell you this, that when Donald Trump was president of the United States, this country was safer. It was more prosperous. We had — we had relations, for example, in a part of the world that I care about called the Western Hemisphere that we’re very strong, we had a lot of good things done there,” Rubio said.
“I think the country and the world was at a better place when he was president, and I would love to see him return to the White House compared to the guy who’s there now, Joe Biden, who’s been a disaster economically. Look at the world, every single day we wake up to a new crisis, to a new conflict. Everything has gone on fire since the time Joe Biden took over. Afghanistan’s gone down. Ukraine has been invaded,” Rubio continued.
Rubio added, “Now, the Philippines and the Chinese are on the verge of something bad happening every single day. Not to mention the threats to Taiwan. And we have this blowup in Haiti going on in our very own hemisphere. We take up every single day, terrorist attacks, 9 million people across the border. That’s what matters to me.”
There has been no official announcement about who Trump has or may select as his potential running mate.
However, a recent Center Square Voter’s Voice poll asked voters, “Who should Donald Trump choose as his vice presidential candidate?”
The poll had Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis narrowly ahead of other contenders on the list with 18 percent, ahead of former United Nations Ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who had 17 percent.
Sen. Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy both had 15 percent ahead of all the other contenders who were in single digits.
Popular SiriusXM podcast host Megyn Kelly also speculated recently that she freshman Republican Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama could be on Trump’s possible VP list.
Kelly played a video clip of an interview Trump did with Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly in which the former president said he had removed “some people” who he “didn’t think behaved properly” out of consideration.
“Does ‘they didn’t behave appropriately,’ do you think — we’re trying to get into his mind — mean somebody who attacked him?” Kelly asked. “Because I think, I think he would have used a different word. You know, ‘They turned out to be losers.’ You know, I think he would have been stronger in his condemnation, and he might have even named them if they had actually slammed him.”
“Ruthless” podcast co-host Michael Duncan offered that Trump “doesn’t like desperation” before suggesting that the 45th president could have ruled “some people” out because he felt they “are a little too thirsty” for the position.
Kelly speculated that Britt, who delivered the GOP rebuttal to President Joe Biden’s 2024 State of the Union address, could potentially be considered a “dark horse” candidate for Trump’s running mate.
Nevertheless, according to the Daily Caller, the conservative commentator suggested that Trump might have been dissatisfied or embarrassed by Britt’s performance.
