GREENFIELD, Iowa – A devastating tornado swept through Greenfield, Iowa, causing multiple deaths and leaving at least a dozen people injured. The state patrol reported extensive damage in the small town of Adair County, with homes destroyed, cars thrown about, and trees left stripped bare.

Meteorologist Brad Small from the National Weather Service in metro Des Moines revealed that on Tuesday afternoon, the state experienced a series of tornadoes, with at least six tornadoes confirmed. Small mentioned that survey teams would be dispatched to assess the impact more accurately in the coming days.

The focus of the assessment teams will be on three main areas in Iowa that suffered the most significant damage from the tornadoes. The town of Corning in southwest Iowa, Greenfield, and northern Polk County were among the areas hit by these destructive storms.

In the aftermath of the tornado, Johnston High School in southwest Iowa sustained damage and was forced to close temporarily. Small highlighted the importance of understanding tornado ratings, which are based solely on the damage caused, not the appearance of the tornado itself.

Despite the recent devastation, the weather forecast for the area indicates a reprieve from severe weather in the coming days. While there may be some light showers and a rumble of thunder, the severe weather potential is minimal for now.

This unfortunate event comes after a turbulent month of April, during which Iowa experienced the fourth-highest number of tornadoes recorded in a single month. The communities affected by these natural disasters are resilient and will work together to recover and rebuild in the days ahead.
