Tyre, Lebanon – A recent commission of inquiry revealed shocking new details about an explosion that occurred at Israel’s military headquarters in Tyre 41 years ago. Initially believed to be a gas leak explosion, the commission led by IDF Maj.-Gen. Amir Abulafia and a senior Shin Bet division chief has determined that the incident was actually caused by a suicide bomber. The tragic event on November 11, 1982, claimed the lives of 76 Israeli security forces and 15 Lebanese detainees.

The investigation into the explosion uncovered evidence suggesting that a Hezbollah terrorist likely crashed a car loaded with explosives and gasoline into the military building, leading to its collapse. Questions have also been raised about the integrity of Israel’s defense department regarding a potential cover-up at the time of the incident and failure to address past shortcomings.

In light of ongoing IDF investigations into defensive failures in October, the findings of the Tyre investigation hold significant importance. The commission’s thorough examination brought forth new evidence and statements from Lebanese witnesses who confirmed the terrorist attack involving a white car colliding with the building.

Israeli advancements in technology and forensics have played a crucial role in shedding light on the events of 1982. Unlike the limited investigative capabilities of the past, present-day Israel is better equipped to analyze and understand the tactics employed in such attacks. The commission also highlighted the lack of awareness in 1982 regarding the Iranian regime’s involvement with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

A poignant detail presented by the commission was the identification of the 17-year-old Ahmad Qasir as the perpetrator of the bombing. As Hezbollah continues to commemorate the attack annually on November 11 as “Hezbollah’s Martyr Day,” the commission’s findings hold a significant historical and political significance.

The members of the commission were carefully selected by IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, in collaboration with Shin Bet director, Ronen Bar, and Israel Police Chief Kobi Shabtai. The revelations from the inquiry shed new light on a tragic chapter in history and underscore the importance of thorough investigations and commitment to uncovering the truth.
